Numerous asteroids are coming towards the earth from time to time.  Concerns have been raised about whether it will hit the earth.

It is thought that an asteroid 160 meters wide would wreak havoc if it hit a populated area of the earth.  Thousands of people will die.

Earth collisions with asteroids larger than 1 km will cause damage worldwide.

According to a report in the BBC, the US space agency NASA has started an experimental mission to protect the earth from asteroid impact.  On Wednesday, the company launched a spacecraft named Dart for the first time.  The spacecraft will hit an asteroid called Dimforce.  This will check if there is any change in its orbit and speed.  That being said, this is the first human experiment - an attempt to change the orbit of an asteroid to save the Earth.

The height of the vehicle named Dart is only 19 meters, on the other hand the two asteroids that are going to hit are 60 meters wide and 160 meters wide.  Therefore, scientists think that its impact will not be able to change the orbit of the asteroid too much.  However, they think that with this vehicle as much as is needed to protect the earth from injury.

Tom Statler, a scientist on the mission, says there are many smaller asteroids than larger asteroids.  So if an asteroid ever strikes the Earth at all - then it is more likely to be small in size.
